LitFest Pasadena at Mountain View

LitFest Pasadena crossed the border and held a fundraiser at Altadena’s Mountain View Mausoleum last week. Scenes from Shakespeare were played by Westridge, Mayfield, and Alverno students, and an A cappella choir from Marshall sang, led by David Pitts and featuring my pal Sonia’s son Austin.

Arroyo Verde Awards Announced

The winners of the 2010 Arroyo Verde Awards were announced today.

The Arroyo Verde (Green Arroyo) Awards are the most prestigious local environmental awards. The awards recognize those who have made a valuable contribution to protecting and improving the Arroyo Seco watershed and our local communities during the past year.

Advocacy Award – The Hahamongna Bloggers
Greening the Arroyo - Agency – Foothill Municipal Water District
Greening the Arroyo – Organization – Urban Semillas and Miguel Luna
Greening the Arroyo – Business - Arroyo Vista Inn
Volunteers - Arroyo Green Team – Audubon Center at Debs Park
Citizen Activist - Nicole Possert
Public Official – South Pasadena Mayor Pro Tempore Michael Cacciotti
Special Award – Virgina Neely

The 2010 Arroyo Verde Awards will be presented this Thursday at a festive holiday gathering sponsored by the Arroyo Seco Foundation and the Council of Arroyo Seco Organizations (CASO) at Kidspace Children’s Museum, 480 N. Arroyo Blvd., Pasadena. Refreshments and networking begin at 6:30 pm. The awards ceremony begins at 7:00 pm.

Helicopter Landing in Residential Altadena

These shots were taken in the middle of the first World Series game tonight as this helicopter flew in and landed behind the house across the street from me, between Glenrose and Fair Oaks, above Palm. Anyone have the details on what was going on? Was it the sexual preditor they’re looking for? A medical situation? I shot some video, too. I’ll check that and post if it’s good enough.

SECLUDED ALTADENA CANYON OPENS FOR FINE ARTS AND CRAFTS SHOW:

ART ON PALM, FALL 2010— October 30^th, 9:00 – 4:30

Local artists and artisans will display their latest creations in a secluded private canyon garden at Art on Palm, Fall 2010, Saturday, October 30^th, 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at 1419 E. Palm Street, Altadena, 91001.

The one-day-only show and sale features ceramics, collage, drawings, fabric, glass, jewelry, paintings, photography and woodcarvings. Participating artists include: Stephani Anderson, Jane Asari, Julie and Rick Ayers, Karen Bagnard, Erica Batchelder, Evan Chambers, Catherine M. S. Cowles, Ellen Dinerman, Mary Jane Elgin, Kaylie James Wilson, Elisa Goodman, Lynn Hendricks, Jim Heuston, Beverly Jones, Diane Kolde, Susan Kromka, Ron Lawrenz, Dana Sue Miller, Katherine Nakazono, Diane Park, Lucia Pasquinelli, Detra Prete, Anne Sears, Maryrose Smyth, Kathy Spear, Susan Spinks, Kathleen Swaydan, Nancy Unruh, Anna Vosburg, Tris Wasserman, Lys Wilcox, Hitomi Yamamuro, and Lucia Yang.

Admission and parking are free. Light refreshments are available for sale.

Encircled by ancient oaks, the rustic canyon setting for Art on Palm is a restorative venue for guests and a stunning backdrop for the artists’ works. This is the 14th bi-annual fine arts and crafts show. According to the event’s co-producer Mary Jane Elgin “This event benefits everyone. It brings talented artists and their finely crafted works to a discerning and appreciative clientele in a lovely setting.”

Art on Palm, Fall 2010 also benefits the West L.A. Fisher House Foundation. The artists donate a portion of their sales to this non-profit organization that provides humanitarian support for wounded military personnel and their families. For more information about West L.A. “I was in my house and heard this horrendous noise. I thought it was thunder. We looked down at the creek and saw the trees tremble and then fall down.”

That’s what my pals Bob Reid and Greg Downs who live on Canyon Crest said this morning as the water in the arroyo let loose, topping the sides of the banks and propelling rocks and boulders down the canyon.

Caught in the mudflow was Rueben Ruiz and Brandon Leon and his dad, each in different trucks. Ruiz, heading down the canyon, suffered the worst. His truck completely spinned sideways, into the Leon’s truck, mud covering his roof. Ruiz had to climb out of the passenger window, getting covered in mud himself.

“I have a house up at the top that I am restoring. I was on my way down and got caught. Had to climb out that window. I can laugh now.”

Take a look at the pix. What a mess. Even Univision TV showed up to document the event.

Event not to miss!

Who: Ken Kragen is the force that made history with stellar philanthropic events in the 1980s that changed fundraising forever. He produced We Are the World and Hands Across America. I recently met Ken at a Caltech event and invited him to speak. He’s a fireball and is about to announce another giant event later this month.

When/What: On January 14, Ken will kick off Martin Luther King week at Caltech with his talk: Accomplishing the Impossible: Stories of Historic Humanitarian Efforts.

Where: Caltech, Avery Dining Hall (Del Mar at Holliston) from noon to 1 p.m.
